FAQs
- Is the trip safe?
Absolutely. Safety is our top priority. We equip every expedition with high-quality recovery gear, navigation tools, and professional two-way communication systems. Our crew is highly experienced in desert driving and emergency procedures. While the Empty Quarter is remote, we carry an Iridium satellite phone with search and rescue coverage. Oman itself is one of the safest countries in the world, and we plan our routes meticulously to avoid unnecessary risks. By following our expert guidance and maintaining safe driving practices, you’ll enjoy an unforgettable yet secure adventure.
- How do I get to Oman?
Most guests fly into Muscat (MCT) or Salalah (SLL), depending on the chosen itinerary. Many nationalities, including EU and US passport holders, can obtain a visa on arrival, but we recommend checking Oman’s latest entry requirements. We’ll meet you the morning after arrival, introduce you to your expedition vehicle, and set off towards the Rub Al Khali. If you’re arriving early or extending your stay, we can advise on excellent accommodation and local attractions. Some of our guests combine their desert adventure with a stopover in Dubai, which is about one hour’s flight away.
- What should I pack to bring along?
Pack light but smart. Essentials include sturdy closed shoes, a hat, long-sleeve shirt, sunglasses, and sunscreen for protection against the sun. A lightweight sleeping bag and foldable pillow ensure comfort at night, while a flashlight, preferably head-mounted, is useful for camp. Bring personal toiletries, electronics with protective cases, and your favourite music. Luggage should fit in a small, soft bag—hard cases are impractical. We provide all camping, cooking, and safety equipment, so you just need to bring your adventurous spirit.
- What if we get lost in the desert?
That won’t happen. Our expeditions are meticulously planned using Garmin GPS satellite imaging with real time positioning, printed roadbooks, and professional radio communication. Our experienced guides lead the convoy, ensuring nobody strays off course. Even in the unlikely event of a technical failure, we have multiple backup systems in place, including an Iridium satellite phone for emergency communication. With expert navigation and constant monitoring, we guarantee a seamless and safe journey through the desert.
- Do I need previous offroad driving experience?
Not at all! We welcome both seasoned offroad drivers and complete beginners. On the first day, we take it slow, introducing you to sand-driving techniques, reading the terrain, and recovering stuck vehicles. You’ll have plenty of time to build confidence before tackling the high dunes. We provide fully equipped automatic Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles, chosen for their ease of handling in soft sand. With our expert guidance, you’ll master the desert in no time.
- I am vegan, is there food I can eat?
Yes! We take dietary preferences seriously and provide plenty of fresh, plant-based meal options. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or have specific food allergies, we tailor the menu to ensure everyone enjoys delicious and nourishing meals. Let us know in advance so we can stock up on the right ingredients. Picture yourself savouring grilled vegetables, hearty salads, and traditional Middle Eastern dishes under a starlit desert sky—it’s an experience for all food lovers.
